Indian Weddings - Rituals and Popular Attires

Indian weddings have various rituals and ceremonies. Each ritual has its own significance and importance. In North India, each place has its own set of customs. There is only a slight difference in customs according to regions but rest of the wedding ceremonies remains the same.

Wedding Rituals and Popular Attires -

Ceremony at girl's house on the wedding day-

Chura Ceremony- In the morning the maternal uncle of the girl present her gold and two sets of red white bangles (Chura) which she has to wear during and after the wedding. Also, her relatives and friends tie Kalire (jingle) on these churas. Everyone convey best wishes and blessings to the "would be bride".

Popular Attire - Bride wears a salwar kameez on this auspicious day. During the pooja she wears a red or pink color salwar kameez preferably which has light work and embellishments. She wears no jewelry and her hair is tied in a bun.

Then there is Vatna ceremony in which everyone's put a paste of turmeric powder in chick pea flour to bride's body. This is done to make her look beautiful on her special day.

Popular Attire - She wears a not so fancy salwar kameez or a plain cotton saree during this ceremony.

At the grooms place -After Vatna ceremony at boy's place the next function is Ghodi Chana - Here the groom's sister-in-law lines the boy's eyes with Kohl and the groom's sisters and cousins feed and adorn his mare. After that the boy climbs the horse and immediately leaves his home for the wedding venue dancing and singing.

Popular Attire - He wears a simple white color pajama kurta for vatna ceremony. Generally white kurta pajama preferably with chikan work is very popular.

Marriage -
Varmala ceremony is exchange of garlands between the brides and the groom. The bride and groom take rounds of the fire and exchange vows. In the end the couple touches the feet of all the elder members in the family and seeks their blessings for a happily married life.

Popular Attire for the bride -
Designer Wedding Sarees - Bride wears a heavily embellished wedding saree. Wedding sarees are adorned with heavy work of embroidery, zari, zardosi, sequin or mirror. Fabric like silks, heavy work georgette, crepe and net are very popular for weddings sarees. Sarees can be teamed up with brocade or contrast blouse. A bride wears heavy matching jewelry. Kundan, polka and golden jhalar sets are very popular for weddings.

Designer Lehenga Choli - This is also one of the very popular attire for brides. Brides for their weddings wear heavily embellished lehenga choli with lot of zari or zardosi work. The preferable color is shades of red, maroon or pink. Brides team them up with matching jewelry and dupatta to complete their Indian traditional look.

Sherwani - Is very popular attire among grooms for their weddings. Sherwani can be with heavy or light work depending on the grooms choice and taste. They team it up with traditional juttis and a stole wrapped around their neck.
